How to Carve a Spoon
The woodworking bug didn’t quite bite me during my first wood carving class at a local shop, but I certainly felt the spark. My dad, a true maker at heart, started a woodworking club to create a space where people could come together, work on projects, and connect. The class I took at Fireweed was about more than just carving a spoon from a soggy birch blank—it gave me a chance to slow down, learn new skills, and share time with others.
I was surprised at how much upper body strength I developed as I practiced different carving techniques. What I took away from the experience wasn’t just a prehistoric-looking spoon, but a reminder to slow down, try new things, and connect with the people around me. Oh, and I biked there for a little extra exercise, only to realize I probably didn’t need the workout after all!
