Yoga Principle #1 Practice Peace

Yoga is so much more than just poses and stretching. In fact, the stretching part, asana, is only one area of yoga. Yoga is a discipline focusing on the whole person. Hundreds of years ago, a sage named Patanjali wrote the Yoga Sutras, a ‘how to’ guideline to do yoga which is still followed today. It includes attitudes or moral codes, or yamas and niyamas, daily habits, for holistic health and wellness. We’re going to explore these ‘10 Yoga Principles’ because these mindful practices cultivate wellness and foster personal development in your every day life. They are principles that focus on bringing your attention inward.

Yoga Principle #1: Peacefulness

In Theory: Also known as the Hindu and Buddhist term, Ahimsa. Be gentle and peaceful not only to yourself in thought and action but to others as well. Notice and release fear and misunderstandings because they can lead to anger, violence, or close-mindedness.

In Action: Someone cuts you off in traffic while driving to work late. Instead of letting your irritation take over and putting you over the edge, consider compassionate thoughts about that driver and for yourself. It’s not easy to be running late and feeling rushed.
