Chat GPT Prompt for Warm-Ups

Do you ever wish you had fun warm up questions to open each class session but don’t really have the time to come up with them? Educators tend to have lots of tasks to do and not enough time to do them all. They also know that engagement and connection to their learners, especially at the beginning of a learning session is impactful. Analysis conducted by the Brookings Institute indicates that approximately 48% of teachers have children at home that they are caring for. And did you know that 1 in 6 employees are caregivers to aging parents (according to AARP)? So this tells us that educators might not have much time outside of the school day to create daily warm up questions in addition to grading, lesson planning, parent communications, and all the other responsibilities involved in the average school-work day.

Enter Chat GPT - time saver, thought partner, creative tool. Right now, the 3.5 version is free, and soon the 4.0 version will be free. One way that I use Chat GPT is to help me get started on creating a list of daily warm up questions. These work well also as a last 5 minute of the session activity if I don’t have an exit ticket.

How do you start? Follow these simple steps and customize the results to tailor it to your authentic voice and setting.

  1. Head to Chat GPT 3.5 and create an account if you are new.

  2. I’m a CTE teacher, so I type ‘5 warm up questions for foods class label reading’ because it’s a 5 day week and we are studying food labels.

  3. If I’m not satisfied with this first round of output, I will create another prompt that says ‘revise for teens’ or ‘revise to be more friendly’.

  4. I edit the results and then use them on my opening slides that I project. Students answer these questions at the top of the hour (which gives me time to take attendance and students to arrive late) before we dive into our lesson for the day.

There you have it! ChatGPT is a great thought partner, time-saver, and a creative tool for those of us who are short on time but want to deliver engaging, impactful lessons. Have fun with it and give it a try today!
